Meet Joe Scharnweber of Diamond Entertainment

Had the wonderful Opportunity to be interviewed by SD Voyager a few months ago. Below is the wonderful write up. THe original article can be found here.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Scharnweber.

Joe, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My love for music has been lifelong but my love for DJing and events began at age 13 when I helped a local radio station DJ a high school dance. I vividly remember carrying tubs of CDs and having to search through the thousands of discs when students came to the DJ booth to request music. Throughout high school and college, I ran a small DJ business doing events all over the state whenever I had free time. After graduating from the University of Iowa with a degree in Music Therapy, I moved to San Diego for a music therapy internship working everywhere from Scripps, Navy Medical Center, and the San Diego Rescue Mission. After falling in love with San Diego during my internship I decided to stay and found a job as a music therapist at a local San Diego psych hospital. After some time, I began to get the itch for DJing and events again. Thus, began Diamond Entertainment. This coming January will mark our first full year of business in San Diego. We have a handful of events left for this year and a packed calendar for 2018!

Has it been a smooth road?
One thing I learned early in life was that struggles are actually just showing you are growing in life and in your business. Starting a business from scratch has its ups and downs, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. My main gripe in life, currently, is that there are not enough hours in the day! My top priority is ensuring all of my clients have the best, most memorable DJ and entertainment experiences possible. Once I know this is done, I put my energy towards littler, yet still important details — things like ensuring my website is up to date and fulfilling my other passions and hobbies.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Diamond Entertainment story. Tell us more about the business.
Diamond Entertainment is a premier DJ company that primarily focuses on weddings. We understand that your wedding entertainment is a major part of your special day. We tell our clients that their guests will forget a bad piece of food or some missing flowers, but a bad DJ will certainly put a damper on the evening and have your guest talking for weeks.

We treat every single wedding as if they are our own and put hours and hours of preparation and time for each event. Unfortunately, many local DJs are self-taught and have little knowledge when it comes to the music they are playing. That is why we take special pride in providing educated, attentive DJs. Our DJ, Joe, has a bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy from the University of Iowa, has taken 5 years of music theory classes and 4 years of music history classes, and has completed over 13 years of singing and guitar lessons.

We are one of the few DJ/entertainment companies in the Southern California area that does not offer packages. This is because we believe every couple’s wedding, reception and experience should be unique!

Couple A is going to have different wants and needs than couple B so why should we be selling them the same package?

With that being said, we offer many different services for couples to choose. Our services include:

-Live guitar
-Wireless microphones
-Custom playlists/music for each portion of the day
-Live sound for reception and ceremony
-Master of Ceremony services
-Recorded speeches
-Custom wedding monogram
-Projector and screens for slideshow and videos
-Uplighting
-Dance floor lighting

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
One of my favorite trends pertains to DJ education. When I was DJing 10 years ago, I had no idea where I could receive training on how to make myself a better DJ.

These days, there are more DJ conferences than I can count, numerous DJ sharing platforms such as Facebook groups and podcasts, DJ coaches, and many other resources to make yourself a better DJ and entertainer. I foresee this trend to continue to grow, and it will really shine a light on the amount of time and energy some DJs put in compared to others. With so many opportunities to learn and improve your skills, it is paramount that couples find a DJ who stays up to date with the latest education, trends, and effectively utilizes these resources.
